Even the Hackintosh Does NOT Live Up To My Standards
May 4th
I do an awful lot of Mac-hating here on my blog, and usually for good reason.
I usually have mixed things to say about Apple products, and I do love my iPod touch, and I do want an iPad 3G, but as far as their actual computers go, I don’t usually have anything nice to say.
Previously, my experience with a Mac had only gone as far as OS 9, which as even most Mac users will tell you, sucks. I’d heard about the “Hackintosh” some time ago and thought I might give it a go, but it proved to be more hassle than it’s worth.
I managed to get my hands on about 3 different versions of the Hackintosh OS, only one of which worked, a prebuilt VMWare image of Mac OS Leopard.
The pros: It works… kind of. I haven’t fully explored any compatible hardware devices, I have only played around inside the OS a bit. It runs fairly decent for a virtual machine, but generally more and more laggy the longer I have it open. Unfortunately, the one purpose for which I wanted Mac OS, using the iPhone SDK, is completely out of the question since apparently you need OS X 10.6 to run the SDK, and I have 10.5. Kind of stupid that it won’t even let me try, and I don’t know if updating will work due to the nature of the hackintosh. But hey, the thing works, and if you want to play around with it, grab the torrent and get to downloading.
The cons: No iPhone SDK support, no sound, laggy performance, Mac OS can’t do anything else my PC can’t EXCEPT run the SDK, and this version won’t even do that.
Two thumbs WAY down for Mac OS. It’s overly graphically done, and does not run well. Combine that with the cost of the hardware and I can say it’s a fair bet you won’t ever see me buying a Mac.
Will somebody please crush Microsoft and make a real alternative OS? Even Ubuntu has a long way to go.
Back To The Desktop Customization Obsession
Nov 6th
I’ve started to fuck around with desktop customization again, this time geared more toward simplicity and usability. The following example is what I am currently using right now on my desktop. It displays weather, my Twitter feed, uTorrent downloads, and system monitors, all in a very clean fashion.
This is intended more as an informative desktop than something pretty, but it ended up looking pretty good because I am very anal about that >_<
If you’re interested in doing something similar, check out Rainmeter.
How To Jailbreak iPod Touch (OS 3.1.2)
Oct 17th
So I finally did it, and after all this I wanted to share the instructions on how to do so, mostly for Cupcake (I know she wants to jailbreak hers too). This is really the easiest jailbreak yet, and it works on the latest OS, so definitely do it, everything was so simple and worked great.
As you can see I have done some pretty heavy modifications already, and it was actually pretty easy. Here are the steps to being free of Apple tyranny:
Download and run Blackra1n from the authors web site here
Be ABSOLUTELY SURE you have version 3.1.2 of the iPod OS installed. To check if you do, open settings > General > About, and the version will be listed there. Yes, I stole these screen caps from here because I am lazy.
I won’t bother with the screen shot of Blackra1n because it’s ONE FUCKING BUTTON. If you fuck that up, you deserve whatever happens to you. Just click “Make it ra1n” with your iPod connected, and wait. It will install, then reboot your device. After that, you should see a new icon for Blackra1n on your iPod. Open it up.
You can choose from 3 different installer apps. I went with Cydia, personally, because it is the most widely used, but you can install others too if you like.
That’s it! Now you use the Cydia app like you would the app store, to locate and install new apps.
If you want to change your carrier text (like how I changed mine from “iPod” to “aPoc” install an app called “MakeItMine” and change the carrier text as such).
Take the time to browse themes for your device and find what suits you best!
